Lars Cawley Born 1968, Christchurch |
Lars Cawley was introduced to alternative comics by
his school friend Peter Rees. 1988 and 1989 were the years of Cawleys "initial mini comic frenzy," during which he produced numerous minicomics, many featuring an alter ego named Sharpie (such as Luck - I Aint Got None). In 1991 he published two more ambitious comics: Ralla and Kookoo and a 32-page digest, Past Tense. And in 1993 he drew Rocks, a 16-page minicomic about childhood. But his most ambitious work to date has been Check the Blinker - the first two issues of which were published in 1994 and 1995. The story is reminiscent of Miyazakis Nausicaa, with its fantastic setting and evocative and lyrical storytelling. Since then, Cawley has drawn another minicomic, Dirty War, and a number of short strips, including cartoons for the Christchurch gig guide Bugg. Cawley has spent much of the last few years in Japan but now lives in Auckland, where he works as an animator and designer. |
