What I Did on my Holiday

Sorry to be quiet for so long, but the truth is I'm avoiding the computer at the moment, in order to do more writing and drawing. Anyway, click on the picture to read the NZ Herald's account of my trip to France late last year. It was wonderful - not least because of the vast amount of quality French food we were force-fed by our very generous hosts! Oh, the literary side of it was good too, of course...

Particularly interesting for me to catch up with current goings-on in the Franco-Belgian comics scene (in short: manga are HUGE! and there's a ferocious argument going on over the future of 'independent' B.D.). Picked up a big stack of interesting new (and not so new) albums, and also a few alternative manga books that have never been translated into English (e.g. this book by Kazu Yuzuki).

Anyway, back to work...

Hey Dylan,
My name is William McLeod. I met you in Gainesville this past week during the comic book conference/workshop. I was expressing a common fear I have with the process of making/buying/being around comic books. Your words were exactly what i needed to hear and I just wanted to thank you and your friends for the time you took to come out here and talk to us even though only a few of us showed up. I have a few (more than a few) decent ideas for some work. I have not begun to draw them because I'm still writing them at the moment. Starting them is easy but finishing them is hard. Even the ending caan be easier than the "middle passage" as it were. I hope maybe you can help me with this. I'd post it here but in truth I think its a little bit too long for the comment page on your blog but if you read this any time remotely soon please just e-mail me at Seraph0082@aol.com so I can have your e-mail addy so I can send you some of my writing. Thanks again for all you've done. Keep up the fine work!
Truly,
Will

Hi Dylan, it's MattyK, I wanted to know more about Film Documentary you mention in Hicksville website news page. Additionally Do you know how I can find out more about the Documentary being made about NZ comics that your dad is involved with? I bailed him up in a seedy bar in Wellington one night during the MedieNZ conference a couple months ago and he mentioned going to the Erics with the film crew and getting Eric Ressetar on film (I am so happy that this Doco is being made!!!) Is there anywhere I can go to find out more about it?

Hi Matt - the doco is being made by Point of View productions and is directed by my step-mother Shirley Horrocks. She's made a bunch of other highly acclaimed documentaries about NZ artists and writers (including Allen Curnow, Marti Friedlander, Len Lye, Albert Wendt etc). The comics doco is pretty much finished now, though I don't know yet when it will be on air. No doubt it will be discussed on Black River Digital closer to the time! I haven't seen it yet, but am looking forward to it. Getting Eric involved at the outset was really wonderful.
